How Long Does Clear Aligner Treatment Take?

One of the most common questions from patients who are considering clear aligners is how long they will need to wear them. The answer varies from person to person, but there are consistent factors that shape treatment length. Here is what to expect and what you can do to stay on track.

What is the typical treatment timeline?

Clear aligner treatment ranges from as little as a few months for minor corrections to 18 to 24 months for more complex cases. The average treatment for mild to moderate alignment issues falls somewhere around 12 months, though this varies significantly based on the complexity of the case and how consistently the aligners are worn.

What factors affect how long treatment takes?

  • Complexity of the case. Simple crowding or spacing issues move faster than cases involving significant bite corrections or multiple teeth needing substantial repositioning.

  • Consistency of wear. This is the most controllable factor. Aligners work by applying continuous gentle pressure to the teeth. Wearing them fewer hours than recommended allows the teeth to settle back slightly between trays, which slows overall progress and may require additional trays to be ordered.

  • How quickly your teeth respond. Individual biology plays a role. Some patients move through trays quickly, while others need more time at each stage.

  • Whether refinements are needed. Midway through treatment, some patients need additional trays called refinements to fine-tune tooth positions. This can add time to the overall process.

How many hours per day do aligners need to be worn?

Most clear aligner systems require 20 to 22 hours of wear per day. That leaves only two to four hours for eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing, and flossing. The easiest way to hit this target is to put the aligners back in immediately after eating and cleaning your teeth. Small habits like this make a significant difference in staying on schedule.

What happens after treatment is finished?

Retention is an essential final phase of any orthodontic treatment. After the active trays are done, retainers are needed to hold the teeth in their new positions. Without retention, teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward where they came from. Most patients are given a retainer to wear nightly, or in some cases for longer periods initially. Following the retention instructions is what allows the result to last long-term.
