Jaw Clicking When You Open Your Mouth: Should You Be Concerned?

Many people notice a clicking or popping sound in their jaw when they open their mouth, chew, or yawn. Sometimes it is painless, while other times it is accompanied by discomfort or stiffness.
This symptom often involves the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the hinge that connects the lower jaw to the skull.
Why jaw clicking happens
Inside the TMJ is a small cartilage disc that helps the joint move smoothly. When that disc shifts out of its normal position, the joint may produce clicking or popping sounds as it moves.
This can occur due to:
Bite imbalance
Jaw muscle tension
Teeth grinding
Injury to the jaw
Joint inflammation
When jaw clicking should be evaluated
Occasional clicking without pain is usually not urgent. However, it may be helpful to seek an evaluation if you experience:
Jaw pain or soreness
Difficulty opening your mouth
Locking of the jaw
Headaches or ear pain
Clicking that becomes more frequent
Early evaluation can sometimes prevent the problem from progressing.
How dentists evaluate TMJ concerns
A dentist may evaluate:
Jaw movement and range of motion
Bite alignment
Muscle tenderness
Tooth wear patterns
Imaging if needed
Because the jaw joints, teeth, and muscles all work together, identifying the underlying cause helps guide appropriate treatment.
